How are Brow Lift Surgeries Performed? - Cosmetic Surgery Guide

Cosmetic Surgery Enquiry

Because of its popularity as a cosmetic surgery, brow lift surgeries are often sought by both men and women of all ages. The surgery is very successful in restoring a more youthful experience and providing more self-esteem and confidence through a re-invigorated appearance. Like many other procedures which are popular, the brow lift has improved vastly over the years to provide you with better than ever results.

How is brow lift surgery done?

There are two main approaches where this type of surgery is concerned, and a consultation with your surgeon will involve discussing your options and determining which will suit your face and your needs best. The first approach basically involves lifting the skin and tissues of your forehead to smoothen and tighten the whole area. The three main types of surgery in this category are:

  • Coronal Brow Lift Surgery – is known for providing long lasting results and is in fact one of the original forms of brow lift surgery. This form of the surgery exposes the muscles of your forehead completely.
  • Endoscopic Surgery – involves using very small surgical incisions to introduce small and specialised instruments under the skin to perform the surgery and tighten muscles without using larger incisions to expose the area as in coronal brow lift surgery.
  • Temporal Surgery – is quite often referred to as a mini face lift because it is less invasive and comprehensive than other types of brow lift surgery. A surgical incision is actually made behind your hair line to hide any scarring, and rather than the whole forehead/brow being lifted by the surgery, only the ends of your eyebrows are lifted by this form of the surgery.

The other category of surgical procedure is known as 'brow suspension', and is a more focussed and localised rejuvenation of eyebrows rather than the whole brow area and forehead. Of this type of surgery there are two distinct options available to you:

  • With an anchor – will involve your surgeon placing a specialised spiked thread beneath your skin and around the target region. The end of this thread is fixed to the muscles of your brow and forehead by surgical means, which is the anchor that gives this technique its name. This effectively suspends your brow, tightening the skin and making your skin firmer, which is exceptionally useful towards the centre of your forehead where the skin can be harder to lift.
  • Without an anchor – this take on a brow suspension surgery is exactly like its anchored counterpart, but without the element of fixing the ends of the specialised threads to the muscles of your face.

What is involved in brow lift surgery?

As the section above describes, there are a few different types of brow lift surgery, which makes it difficult to make a general description of the procedure. There are however certain aspects that all brow lift techniques share in common, and these include the use of anaesthesia for example. Depending on what kind of surgery is being performed, either a local or a general anaesthetic will be used. The former is more likely for brow suspension and mini face lifts, and the latter is the method of choice for methods like coronal brow lifts.

An incision, meaning a small opening through which surgery is performed, will have to be made, although the size of this incision depends on the technique being used. While brow suspension tends be done as an outpatient procedure, which means that you come in for the treatment and can head home afterwards, coronal surgery will require a hospital admission for at least a day, and an endoscopic brow lift will see you hospitalized for at least half that.

Having a number of different approaches and ways of performing a brow lift allows your surgeon to pick what will suit you and what you want to achieve through the surgery best. Tailoring a treatment to your specific needs is an important part of great cosmetic surgery, and so you should always look for a doctor or clinic willing to go the extra mile and give you the personal attention you need.
