Silicone Breast Implant Controversy and the FDA

Cosmetic Surgery Enquiry

Globally, the most prevalent and well-known options for breast implants are those filled with either silicone or saline. Out of the two, the most commonly chosen implants in the past were those containing silicone.

However, prior to the 1990s, a link was made between silicone implants and autoimmune diseases as well as connective tissue disorders. This subsequently put many individuals off silicone implants. As a result, in 1992, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) inflicted an optional suspension on the use of silicone implants in the USA. In 2006, the FDA concluded from a lot of research, that silicone implants were in fact safe for use and gave their approval for their application in breast augmentation procedures, as long as the patient is over the age of 22.

To further support the safety of silicone implants in breast enhancement procedures, in 2011, the FDA declared that further observation and study has shown that the material is safe. Despite this, they also confirmed that the silicone implants are not supposed to last for the duration of the patient's life. As the procedure is so popular all over the world, the FDA is continuing their research into the safety of silicone implants.
