Can I Breast Feed After Breast Implants?

Cosmetic Surgery Enquiry

There have been a number of investigations into whether or not breast implants are safe for breastfeeding. The results of these studies have revealed that it is in fact safe and that silicone gel breast implants will not incur any harm to either the mother or the baby. Despite the fact that the milk is safe for your child to drink, it is not certain whether or not you will actually be able to produce any of this milk.

Problems With Milk Production After Breast Implants

There is still a good possibility that you will be able to breast feed your baby after having breast implants, however the amount of milk produced may be significantly affected. It is important that if you are planning on breast feeding any children in the future, that you inform your surgeon during your consultation so that the choice of implant and positioning can be designed more to suit you.

If your breast implant is inserted in an incision created either in the armpit or underneath your breast, then it is less likely that you will experience any breastfeeding problems. However, if your implant is inserted through an incision in the areola, then there is a higher risk of breastfeeding complications due to nerve damage.

Nerves and milk ducts present in the breast are a vital part of being able to breast feed. The nerves are required to send messages to the brain, which in turn, triggers the production of milk and the milk ducts are responsible for carrying this milk to the nipple that the infant is suckling on. If your milk ducts or nerves are damaged during your breast implant procedure, then it is possible that your milk production will be inhibited.
