Breast Implants and Pregnancy

Cosmetic Surgery Enquiry

Pregnancy is a common feature in the lives of many women, and therefore if you are thinking about breast implants and babies, it is important to consider the effects.

At present, no known health risks to the developing baby are known to occur due to the presence breast implants. Numerous studies have been performed that both saline and silicone implants do not have any negative health impacts on the foetus. However, if your implant suffers a leak or ruptures then there may be some danger involved and you should get the implant removed immediately. If you are planning on getting pregnant and feel that there is a chance of your breast implants being worn or damaged, then you should consult your surgeon prior to conceiving.

Pregnancy and Breast Implant Appearance

During both the pregnancy and breastfeeding stages, your breasts may change in appearance. It is often noticed, especially if the implants are large, that a significant amount of sagging occurs following pregnancy. This sagging effect can further be emphasised if the implants have been positioned quite low or in a subglandular fashion. If you are unhappy with the appearance, then you should be able to undergo implant revision surgery or a breast lift once you have finished breastfeeding.

If you are considering both getting pregnant and getting breast implants, it is recommended that you have your baby and complete nursing first. This is because you will then not be faced with any further surgery after pregnancy to make your breasts return to their pre-pregnancy state. This is also advised if you are considering breast implant revision surgery.
