How should you take care of your infant's mouth? | Dental Treatment Guide
Even if your baby does not have teeth, you should keep their mouth as clean as possible. When your baby is born, you should make it a habit of cleaning their gums. There may be little fussing at first although your infant will get used to it just like they got used to cleaning other parts of their body. Several children actually enjoy brushing their teeth as they grow up. When you clean your baby's mouth
- lay your infant in your lap in such a way where the head is close to your chest. You will be able to look down directly into your child's mouth this way
- make sure that the gums and the teeth are clean. You can use a clean damp cloth to wipe the baby's upper and lower gums. Terrycloth finger cots which can fit over your finger can be used to do this. They can be found in several pharmacies
- clean your infant's teeth twice a day. Clean them once after breakfast and once before going to bed. After your teeth have come into the mouth, you can switch to a soft-bristled toothbrush. When the molars appear on your infant's first birthday, you should consider using a tooth brush all the time already
