How can I Reduce the Risks of Abdominoplasty?
There are a number of ways you can reduce the risks that are mentioned above, though you should remember that the majority of Abdominoplasty's are complication free and that if you follow the rules listed below then you are less likely to have any problems with your own operation.
- DO NOT SMOKE - Like all operations, you are advised to stop smoking before the procedure. Not only will this increase your chances of survival, but it also means that during the healing process there is less chance of you running the risk of necrosis of the flesh as smoking is known to affect the healing process and also to be a contributor to this complication.
- The next point is almost more important than the one above; you should follow to the letter all instructions given to you by your doctor with regards to post-operation healing. They know what they are going on about because (if you have gone with an experienced doctor) they will know what is required to help speed up the healing process. This includes how often to change your bandages, what to drink and the amount of exercise you are allow to do.
- You should also avoid dieting too soon after the operation; this is because though you do not want to ruin the Abdominoplasty by binging on takeaways, you should also eat a good diet (with lots of fruit, vegetables and protein) as eating a decent amount of good food will help the healing process a lot.
- As with other operations you should also avoid over exposure to the sun on the area for at least two weeks after you have the operation. This is because the skin is healing and so if it is exposed to sunlight then it will tan like the rest of your body but, because it is still rebuilding itself and healing, while the rest of your body will return to its natural colouring, the affected area will remain the colour that it changes to and is unlikely to change back. Therefore, if you must go out in the sun for long periods with your stomach exposed then you should use a lot of suntan lotion and, if you can, keep the area in shade or covered up.
These are good points to start with to help with the healing process of your operation, though you should remember that they are only guidelines and you should ALWAYS consult your doctor and listen to what they say when they are telling you what you need to do to (and not do) to help you to heal. However, if you do follow the advice then you should being to heal.
