Sleeve Gastrectomy - What happens next? - Obesity Surgery Guide
If you are looking to have a gastric bypass or a duodenal switch then this is the first stage of that surgery. It means that weight will be lost before you undergo either of these procedures which will reduce any risks.
It is a non-reversible procedure and can take around one to two hours to perform. You will be required to stay in hospital for a couple of days at most. Recovery will usually take around a few weeks.
Your abdomen may be sore afterwards but you will be given medication to deal with this. Any scarring will be minimal and can be hidden by your clothing.
As with gastric banding; for the first two weeks following surgery you will be asked to consume liquids only. Then, you will be allowed semi-solids such as purees, soups for another two weeks.
Finally, you will be back on solid food. You will find that you can only manage small portions due to the reduced size of your stomach. This means reduced calorie intake and weight loss.
