Who is Eligible for Finasteride Treatment?
Finasteride is a strong drug and as a result, it cannot be used by certain people.
Can You Take Finasteride if You Are Completely Bald?
Finasteride is not recommended if you have gone completely bald, as it is not effective. No studies have been carried out as to why this is so. If you have gone completely bald and are considering treatment, you should consult a professional. They will be able to advise you as to what treatments are suitable for your condition.
Can Women Take Finasteride?
Finasteride is not recommended for women during their child- bearing years as it can have a mutative effect on an unborn child. As a result of this, most doctors will not prescribe finasteride to a woman even if she is using contraception at the time. Finasteride is usually only given to women who are post- menopausal or who cannot have children for medical reasons or because they have had a hysterectomy or a fallopian ligation.
Can Children Take Finasteride?
Finasteride is not suitable for use in young children. If you feel that your child has need of finasteride, you should seek medical advice immediately. Balding should not occur in children and if this is happening, you should have your child checked out by a professional rather than trying to treat the hair loss.
Balding in children is likely to be the result of a bigger issue. It may be caused by medication, malnutrition, or illness and thus needs to be checked out. If your child is balding for one of these reasons, they are not suffering from male pattern baldness and therefore finasteride will not work for them.
Finasteride can cause deformities in children as they develop. For this reason, it will not be prescribed for a child by a reputable doctor. You should ensure that finasteride is kept out of reach of all children as absorption through the skin can also cause issues. If you believe that your child has swallowed finasteride, you should seek immediate medical advice.
Can You Take Finasteride if You Have a High Risk of Developing Cancer?
If you have a high risk of developing either breast cancer or prostate cancer, you should not use finasteride. You have a higher risk of developing these conditions if there is a family history of them. You should not take finasteride if you have previously suffered from cancer.
Finasteride is believed to increase your chances of developing breast cancer as it causes the breast tissue to grow. Although it can reduce your chances of developing prostate cancer it is also thought to increase the risk of aggressive prostate cancer should you develop the disease.
If you take finasteride, and you are a man, you should be scheduled for regular prostate specific antigen (PSA) tests. You must make sure that you attend these tests regularly and that you do not miss an appointment. You should also check your breasts regularly whether you are a man or a woman and report any changes such as lumps, discharge, pain, or discolouration to your doctor immediately.
Can You Take Finasteride if You Are Taking Other Medication?
There are no known drugs that react with finasteride however; this does not mean that any medication that you are on cannot react with the drug. It is important that you are open with your doctor about any medications that you are on whether these are prescribed medications or over the counter medications. You should also inform them of any supplements that you are taking such as vitamins, minerals, and herbal medications.
If you have to start a new medication whilst on finasteride, you should tell your doctor that you are taking it. You must always follow your doctor's instructions regarding finasteride and other medications even if this involves stopping the medication.
